Light Frost

zucchini plantWe did have a light frost last week that put a coating on everything above ground level. The rigs were all covered with frosty swirls on their windshields but little damage was noted on any area under five feet above the ground level.

Out in the garden the very tips of the summer squash plants were nipped and curled back as the sun rose and the frost went away. The tomato plants that were sticking up above the cages had gotten the worst of the frost but with all the moisture we had been having, they didn’t look so good anyway and were pretty much spent from producing.

tomato plantThe summer garden is winding down quickly and we are using a lot of root vegetables now. Onions, carrots, beets and potatoes are needing to be dug on a daily basis since the ground is the best spot to store them until the ground is too saturated. Once things turn real muddy, the vegetable begin to deteriorate.

The fruit trees are still producing well and our winter apples of Jonathan, Rome, Red Delicious, Yellow Delicious and Asian Pears are at their peak right now and I need to get busy preserving their goodness before the next frost hits.
