Thin Nibbles

The cows do enjoy it when the gardens begin to really start producing and overproducing. The extra fruit and vegetables invariably get thinned out and make their way to the barns.

This year we have had an exuberance of kale. We have been thinning and trimming since early spring sometimes up to a wheelbarrow load at a time and they keep producing at a rapid pace.

The last of the lettuce gave up this last week with the hot weather and that filled another wheelbarrow for my critters in the show barn.

We got a bucket full of extra cucumbers from my brother when we were picking up wind fall apples for the cows. I have been slicing them up with the other overgrown garden surplus. The complainer cow is back to her full time lowly mooing trying to get a few extra bits thrown her way.

Young calf eating slices of cucumber

The bull calf Uproar, that was born in April, took a tentative nibble of a piece of cucumber and now he begs to eat them out of my hands as I slice them.

He really enjoys it when I slice them into thin rounds, he gently takes the cucumber then wraps his tongue around my hand. I believe it is his way of giving a kiss for good measure.
