In the BarnIn the Woods

The Cupboards Are Bare

20 bundles of kindling stacked on palletAfter this last very hectic week, I find that the garage is once again empty or nearly so. Out of all the stacks, cribs, carts and tubs I am down to a measly 20 bundles of kindling.

It is all hands on deck in order to get the firewood process up and running again.

Mike uses the forks on the front of the tractor to move the few cribs we have dry out to the bull barn where the wood can be processed into bundles and stacked on pallets. The tractor will again be used to move the stacked bundles back to the garage to await the next delivery schedule. It takes one person nearly four hours to get a pallet of 52 bundles wrapped and stacked on a pallet.

While the wrapping activity is carried out in the bull barn, more wood needs to be cut, split and stacked into cribs for final drying. Filling a crib takes two very full Gator loads of 16inch cut rounds from the logs in the landing. A tank of fuel (about 20 minutes) can cut enough wood to fill the Gator one time if a helper can mark the logs so the person sawing can work quickly.

The Gator load is then moved to the barn where the splitter is resting. It takes longer to split the wood into bundle-sized pieces and stacking them in the drying crib than it takes to cut them, this is at least 30 minutes to and hour on each crib.

The tractor is again used to move the full cribs to the garage for the final drying where fans and dehumidifiers are running full tilt. We are going to try to fill all the spare cribs in the next couple of days while the mini-crew in the bull barn are wrapping at full speed. It is going to be a struggle to get enough dry wood processed into bundles for this next week delivery schedule.
