Scenes From The Tractor

I consider myself fortunate in many ways.

I have lots of space to work and play.

I have critters of all shapes and sizes with some roaming freely and some usually behaving themselves in large grazing fields (you know who you are). I have garden space to while away hours weeding or tending precious seedling starts or preparing the copious amount of produce for storage and consuming. I have tons of free fertilizer at my disposal to use at my whims.

I have the forest with its tall canopies and forage-able fungus, the river with its ocean going salmon, natural trout, a smattering of beaver and otters too. I have my firewood project to keep me occupied while the rest of the world is embroiled in controversy, a very pesky virus and the latest round of icy storms.

I may not have come through it all unscathed, but I have to stop myself from getting wrapped up in it all and enjoy the sheer fabulousness of my day-to-day farm life.

So on these days of riding/surfing on the front of a loader tractor of hay bales, firewood or anything that needs to be moved, I am reminded that seeing the beauty in the common things is being most fortunate and truly grateful for the bounty that is all around me. This a story of the common things, of smelling the dirt that crumbles in my hand, of attending to a newborn calf, of stretching barb wire with stiff leather gloves, of running the logging roads with the goofy dogs, of enjoying each adventure.

Beautifully said. It reminds me to rejoice in “the sacrament of the present moment.”
