Pearl And Margarite

This winter storm system that has keeping us busy trying to get around in snow, ice and now mucky muck has brought on a slew of births also. When we put the new herd sire, Sky High, out with the main herd we expected that because of his young age and youthful stature that his breeding would start off slow. He surprised us with four new calves before the first of the year and now another one soon after.

Pearl delivered a heifer (female) calf near the forest at the bottom of the hill not too far from the outdoor feeders. The muddy expanse between the feeders and the barn yard is only a couple of hundred yards, but it seemed to take forever to get the little calf over the mud puddles and huge divots left by the trodden meanderings of the main herd.

Once inside the barn yard Pearl headed into the barn for some delicious hay and a dry place to clean off her now muddy baby girl. Eating was the first order of business while Margarite stumbled around the pen investigating the newness of a dry area but before long her mother was close by her side to finish cleaning off the mud from her newest addition.

Welcome to the farm heifer calf Margarite, weighing in at just 63 lbs., but lively and ready to begin growing.
