Mixed Metaphors

green processor on a lowboy trailerTo keep everyone up on the story of Dang, Dang is the huge piece of equipment that was purchased at the end of the summer last year. Dang is a processor that runs on tracks like a bulldozer, has a cab that sits on top that can swivel completely around so it can run forward or backward easily. It has a large jointed arm with a huge pincer head that can lift or hold trees while felling them off or cutting the trees into log lengths. As processors go, it is small in size but much larger than any equipment or barn we have that can hold its mass.

Bold letters are emblazoned on the jointed arm forewarn all comers of DANGER, I shortened the warning and just call the fellow DANG. Needless to say, it was against my better judgment (strictly in my opinion) that we add such a well-used behemoth to our collection of second and third-hand equipment. But I was out voted by someone who apparently had money burning a hole in his pocket (I am still not convinced that it was a good choice and time will tell if I am right or wrong on this. I am reminded regularly of the protestations I threw around for months regarding the first barn we built on the farm. I could not fathom why it was so big. I felt it was twice the size of anything we would EVER need. I was sorely mistaken and have come to realize that even if the barn was twice the size it would still be not big enough for all our projects, equipment, hay and critters.) Now that you are up to date, here is a DANG story…

Dang has been sitting in the landing since the end of summer. This had been the plan from the beginning, it was purchased when it was so that it could be moved through the crossing in the river before the winter season when crossing would not be allowed because of environmental concerns. There have been some critical repairs done to the equipment and Mike starts it now and again to learn the nuances of the three computers it takes to run the big arm with its saw and pincers, but aside from that, Dang has been in limbo, unmoving near the hardwood landing.

Now that my dwindling fir firewood pile is down to a critical point, Mike has pulled Dang from mothballs and into the fire (so to speak) to put him to work cleaning up a small patch of dead standing fir at the back of the big hay field. This wood is not viable for selling to a mill and is just what I need to keep working on my firewood bundle project. The spot is at the base of the hill and not yet up into the thick forest so Mike is able to move Dang around easily on the turf without causing too much disturbance to the ground. Most of the work Dang will be doing is limbing the trees that are brought to this back landing while Mike learns more about the pivot points, reach of the big arm, and learning the dexterity of the big machine.

I’d been wondering about Dang. Sounds like it is off to an okay start and may well earn its alternate name, Dancer. Time will tell.
