Oregon State University Extension has been busy ramping up Firewise for the planning and execution of safety measures regarding the devastating effects of fire on public and private lands in our state. Making areas fire-adapted to prepare for scenarios like those that played out over the last few years is the goal by utilizing individuals as well as companies to attend to their own homes and surrounding acreages.

Firewise conversations are happening in cul-de-sacs, dense communities, rural farms and large rangelands, we all benefit from awareness and changes made by every participant.

Learn techniques for protecting your home and community from damage associated with wildfire.

We will look at the construction of the home itself and compare the safety of various building materials. The home is split into several zones regarding fire resistance, and we will go over do’s and don’ts within each zone. The area right around the home where it interacts with the landscaping and surrounding forest is also broken into zones, and we will discuss how to make these areas more fire-adapted.

Herb Johnson has been a wildland firefighter for 24 years, and for 19 years he worked for the Oregon Department of Forestry in Southwest Oregon. For 11 years, he has been the coordinator for Firewise USA and for the Fuels Reduction Grant.
