In the BarnIn the Woods

A Spike In Firewood Sales

The summer had been busy preparing to sell firewood throughout the winter. The month of October usually means slipping into the fall season with a few frosts and a toasty fire in the fireplace on those chilly evenings. This record cold month has turned on the purchasing needs of the area and stores began stocking up before the pumpkins sold out.

Pickup being loaded with firewood bundlesSeveral orders came in late this last week and had us delivering two truckloads instead of the normal one trip. It is great that we were able to get all the bundles we had made up for delivery all cleaned up and the garage bay nearly empty. It is also bad that now we have no supply available for the next delivery day because the garage bay is empty. Well, not quite empty, we have 28 bundles of kindling left out of the 100 we had on Sunday.

A pallet stacked with kindling bundlesUp until this last week, we had only produced for sale regular (fir) bundles of firewood and kindling bundles. This summer while we had the opportunity to get a large supply of hardwood from the area along the fence line, we processed a couple of cord for premium bundles. The second load this last week asked for 12 bundles of premium along with the usual order. I broke into the stack that had been drying and curing in my show barn for the last 6 months. When I split a piece and checked for internal moisture, the gauge read a solid 16%, perfect to begin the bundling process.

The next week will be busy refilling the supply with all 3 varieties of bundles. I would say that if you don’t find me at the house I’ll be in the barn, but I am also getting ready to leave for the first session in the REAL Oregon Program and will be gone several days to smartin’-up-a-bit.

Bundling will be frantic for a couple days before I leave and as soon as I return more bundling will take place. Autumn has settled in firmly and I don’t think its going to give up until winter wrestles it into submission.

Long hours standing on the cement floors of the barn while bundling demands sturdy and comfortable footwear. My Chore series Muck boots fit that bill nicely.
