A Bit Of Drying

As of last night, the last little bits of snow piles that had been hanging around since the snow started in December has dwindled away. The ground is firming up some and we are getting around to fixing damage that happened during the colder weather.

We had a couple of cherry trees and a small ash tree go down in the back of the six acre field and we are working them up into salvageable 16 inch pieces. The pieces we get from these trees will not be dry or cured enough to use until the end of summer so as we are cleaning up we are also splitting them into firewood bundle sized chunks and stacking them in a crib for the drying process. Any wood that is splintered, too crooked or damaged will be made into firewood for the outdoor furnace here at the farm to keep the house comfortable.

The salvage work is not difficult but selecting and hauling for the different uses takes much more time than just working it up but it will clean up the area where the critters from the nursery field get to go to do a bit of loafing around the thick understory of tall hemlock, fir, cherry, ash and alder trees.
