Grass Is Always Greener

A couple of weeks ago, one of our newer mother’s in the nursery field had begun to come into heat about a month after delivering her calf. The herd sire, Sky High, was very interested and we were worried that he would try to jump the fence to be in with the group. We opened the gate into the field and he casually snuck in while he thought we weren’t looking and he has been keeping them company ever since.

Yesterday, one of the cows that are part of the main herd on the outside of the fence was showing signs that she was coming into heat. All of these females should have been bred by now but this one had not settled into pregnancy as the rest of them have. The signs of impending heat are scuffling with the other cows, going head to head and pushing foreheads together in silent struggle, and females mounting each other in mock breeding.

Sky High took notice and began pacing the fence line looking for a breach that he could take advantage of but before we could get around the pasture and barn to open the gate he sailed right over to get to this group of females. We are not a bit happy that he is thinking the fence is easily breached and this may cause more problems down the road but for now he is on the greener side of the fence and happily grazing and loafing with the main herd.
