Just A Little Elevation
We delivered a large load of firewood bundles early this week since we were hesitant about what the weather would be doing.
The biggest tarp was used to allow for the whole load to be covered. We still have quite a bit of snow on the ground and the driveway and county road where most of the snow had been plowed or scooped away is quite slick from the packed-down residue that is now solid ice. Timber Road was raised patchy ice spots with a thin coating of fresh snow overnight and we made it to the Sunset Highway without an issue even though there was a rain/snow mix pelting down.
By the time we got to the tunnel it was straight out snowing and there were slushy tracks that we were driving through. This only lasted a couple of miles until we started downhill and then the road was clear. By the time we got to the Banks exit on the highway, there was no sign along the roads or in the fields that there had been a week of snowy weather. The rest of the delivery was simply heavy rain.
In the valley the flood risk is high and there are local roads closed to traffic. Dairy Creek with its multitude of little tributaries is running just over the banks with very brown turbulent water.
By the time we were finished with our deliveries at the three stores, we were soaked. The heater in the pickup was cranked as high as it would go but still the windows had to be half open to keep from steaming up the windows from the inside. During the delivery the weather had warmed just enough for the roads to clear a bit more before the evening brought the freezing and snow possibility back into the picture.
We woke up this morning to gravel and grass – haven’t seen that in a while. There are still snow banks from driveway bulldoziing, but otherwise we’re back to just wet rain – lots of it. I’m thinking of your stretch of Nehalem River and flooding. Hope it isn’t impacting you too much.
