A Designation For Each

three pair of work bootsIf you were to look in my garage, you would see several pair of my boots, more than what one person should own. Most of them are Muck brand because they are by far the most comfortable and sturdy farm boots I have ever worn. But they are also much more costly than the good old rubber mud boots I grew up wearing. That is why it pains me to discard a pair of boots when they get worn to odd shapes, or the bottoms are scuffed so much there are holes in the soles, or the very comfy neoprene sides get holes in them (one snag on a barb wire fence or rubbing past a sharp stick in the woods can cause a leak spot).

Rather than throw them out, I give them their own designation. The pair of boots that are not Muck brand, but a plain plastic garden boot, are used when it is really muddy out and I just need something to keep my feet dry. They have zero insulation value and I cannot wear them when it is cold or I’m spending long hours on cement when working in the barn.

The pair of lightweight Mucks have worn spots on the tread right through the sole and leak with any moisture so can only be used on dry days in the summer without rain, puddles or dew on the grass.  I even fold down the neoprene part so they are cooler to wear.

The chore pair is a heavier boot with thick soles and has better tread, it is what I use when I hike in the woods, but they have holes around the ankles so I cannot wear them if I go anywhere near mud puddles. The pair that thankfully has no tears on the neoprene, are what I wear when I have to negotiate snow, cold mud, puddles or small streams but they have a small leak by the heal where my wiggly foot has cracked the rubber part, so I have to change socks and dry the boots each time I wear them.

Each pair has their own strengths and weaknesses but if used by designation my feet can stay relatively comfortable, usually.

It is obvious I need a new pair of boots but that would mean that I have to finally discard  at least one of the old pairs that are clogging up my area of the garage. It looks like my summer pair are going to be retired, but I hate to give them up because they are the most comfortable out of all the pair I own. It is one of those hard decisions that must be made on the farm.
