Zephyr and Typhoon

When we went across the river for the morning feeding we saw that the gate into the nursery field was askew and we had an extra cow in with the three mothers with their babies and the two  teenage-ish heifers. From all the tracks in the snow it looked like there had been a lot of scuffling going on before the  wire gate had broken open to allow ingress and egress, we were pleasantly surprised that the main herd had not decided to storm into the nursery field and that only one cow, Zephyr, was not where she was supposed to be. Since she is the next one that should calve just after the first of the year. Mike decided to go ahead and leave her in the nursery field for the time being rather than trying to root her out of the mix.

We had thought we were all done with calving for the year but Zephyr had her own little surprise for us before the new year, by that evening feeding after breaking into the nursery field, she had moved away from the small group and found an out of the way place under big trees protected from the snow at the back of the six acre field. When we found her she had her calf all cleaned off and he was standing and attempting his first taste of milk. We left the two where they were for the night with an extra slab of hay for Zephyr.

In the morning the pair were up from the protection of the woods and mingled in with the rest of the nursery field group but Typhoon was finding it difficult to keep up with the foot of snow impeding he movements, so we moved mother and baby into the barn to mingle with Ruby and Eve until the weather moderates.

Welcome to the farm bull calf, Typhoon. Born 12/27/21 and weighing 70 lbs.
