Whatcha Doin’ Saturday?
There are signs of spring popping up everywhere, but the surest of them all are the collaborations of our local Small Woodlands groups. Today focuses on the Washington County Small Woodlands Association, but do not put your computer down until you check out tomorrows post about the Columbia County Small Woodlands event…
Washington County Small Woodlands Association has a yearly event that has all of Hillsboro, most of Washington County and pulls good numbers from Multnomah, Clatsop, Yamhill and Columbia Counties as well. I’m talking about the Native Plant Sale that is held each spring. This year it is Saturday March 14 at the Washington County Fairgrounds at the Cloverleaf Building 9am to 3pm or until the plants are gone!
The sale boasts over 100 varieties of Native Plants and has detailed planting and growing information for your yard and garden.
You can begin your shopping list early by looking at the Washington County Small Woodlands website and click on Outreach Activities (or click here) to get your own detailed information. Many shoppers use the guide to chose the plants and use as a shopping list when getting to the sale. When I say it is a lot of information, I am not kidding, it is ten pages long. If you have ever swooned over seed catalogs, or spent more than a few minutes perusing the gladiolus bulbs, asparagus roots or primrose varieties, you are going to love the Native Plant Sale brochure. The wonderful part about the information is that it is just the beginning. Getting to the sale at the Washington County Fairgrounds is the MOST amazing part.
It is hard to describe in mere words, but imagine a room full of Oregon Native Plants from the smallest ferns, delicate mosses and herbs to Fir, Western Red Cedar and Wild Cherry trees with everything Oregon in-between. Now, with a room bursting with Native Plants, add dozens of members of the Washington County Small Woodlands Association willing to assist with any questions, concerns, help choosing and loading your purchases into your rig. Sale is from 9am til 3pm or until plants are gone!
To assist with pollination in your area, you may want to check out the Mason Bee section of the sale.
Most plants are potted, as noted in the Plant List 2020. We provide native plant experts to help with selection, boxes for handling and transporting the plants, and general volunteers to help collect and carry the plants to your vehicle. Credit cards, cash, and checks are welcome payment. Come early for the best selection.
The Cloverleaf Building, 802 NE 28th Avenue, is on the far west side of the Washington County Fair Grounds.
From NE Cornell Road in Hillsboro, turn south onto NE 28th Avenue. Watch for the signs to the ample parking lot. See you at the native plant sale!
