Waiting, Waiting
Cows seem contented to those who drive by county roads, the critters seem to spend their days trying to decide if they want to stand up and graze or if they would like to recline and chew cud for a while.
In reality, those cows are on the lookout for dangers to the little ones in the field like a coyote or a dog that tends to get too close. They are scanning the skies for ominous clouds that would send them meandering toward the tall trees for weather respite. They watch the big birds like vultures and Bald Eagles in order to steer clear of prey carcasses that bring the avian creatures into an area. They monitor the fences to see if anyone (usually me) has forgotten to close the field in properly. And they wait for the next meal.
Our newest mother, #99 Softly, has the big nursery field all to herself with her baby. But she knows when meal time is approaching and gets as close to the outdoor feeders as she can while she waits even though there is a fence that separates her with the rest of the herd. Her week old calf, NinetyNine, gives up on the waiting and sleeps in a pile at her feet. Sometimes waiting is very exhausting.

The baby may be happily sleeping, but mama is giving you the eye – where’s diner?
Softly is a gentle soul. She watches intently for us to feed her, but she makes no demands.
