The Smell Of Springtime
If you have been watching the farm through the posts I do, you may remember last spring when I wrote about an Aunt of mine and her kids, I will retell the short version for you.
Many, many years ago my Aunt had mentioned (her kids happened to be listening for a change) that the skunk cabbage was growing out near the swamp and that she sure did enjoy seeing the bright yellow colors that foretold that spring was indeed upon them. My Aunt went about her day and took off to do some shopping.
The kids, wanting to make their Mom happy, went out to the swamp and picked arm loads of skunk cabbage and brought it all into the house for their mother. Now skunk cabbage has that name for a reason, and a house full of vases of every size and shape loaded with the odoriferous blooms was quite unexpected when she got home from doing errands.
Not able to turn down such a generous and thoughtful gift from her children, she thanked each one of them gracefully. It is rumored that she even baked a special dessert for them that evening. Realizing just how happy the gesture made their Mom, the kids dutifully picked skunk cabbage for her every year after that. She was happy that most years it was only one vase full of skunk cabbage rather than a whole house full.
