Tent Caterpillars Sighted
There are many cycles found in nature. One year can be completely different from another year.
So is the nature of tent caterpillars. Last year, it was hard to find a nest. This year, I have spotted two in the last day.
A few years ago, the woods and trees along the river were covered in these nests of squirming critters.
Along the highway and all the way to the coast, the invaders lived off the green leaves as the hungry critters decimated the leaf trees.
That year the Oregon Extension Office sent out information for the public about these critters. Their recommendations were to do nothing with the offending creatures, and they asked that individuals should not use chemicals to try to kill the caterpillars. If left alone the bugs would live out their boom cycle that would end come winter time and would not cause any lasting issues with the trees.
