In the Fields

A Month Old Now

Quiet is still favoring her healing hoof a little bit so we are continuing to segregate her and her baby from the rest of the critters that share the show barn. We are enjoying having Quiet and her bull calf, Uproar, so close to the house. We can see how fast he is growing and get to monitor his progress. He is now eating bites of hay from the manger alongside his mother at feeding time.

calf eating in mangerLately he has taken to spending more time away from his mother while she is out grazing in their exclusive pasture. Sometimes he is dozing inside the loafing area of the barn while Quiet is completely out of sight from him. Uproar is also testing the limits of the boundaries and has been looking for any kind of lapse that could signal an area that could be breached.

Our temporary, single strand electric fence that bi-sects the far end of their pasture from part of the bull pen has been tempting him. In the evenings, just before the sun goes down and while his mother is loading up on fresh grass to last her through the night, Uproar sneaks under the electric wire and scoots around in the longer grass.

Last night he snuggled down for a quick nap in the tall growth before burning off his excess energy with laps around the field and finally wriggling back under the fence where Quiet was waiting for him to settle down for the night.

Since Uproar and Quiet have no other critters in their area to contend with, Uproar has gotten quite spoiled and does not like to wait for anything. Instead of having to be patient for bigger critters to eat at the manger, get a sip of water from the stock tank, or find the best spot for sleeping, he assumes that the big wide world is made just for him. Enjoy it while you can little guy, you will have company to contend with before long.

At first, your second picture looked like Uproar had rolled around in a pile of hay until it covered him. I wish him well when this spoiled child gets with the other kids.
