She Didn’t Take Long

Well, Opal was a surprise. We had put her out in the nursery field to get cleaned up from all the mud and gunk before she calved. By evening feeding time, she already had her calf cleaned up and it had nursed and was laying back down.

cow with newborn calfNow that we look back about how she was so insistent on staying with the herd rather than moving the direction we were trying to point her, she may have been in labor when we moved her away from the main herd and out to the nursery field. She didn’t appear that close to calving when we saw her in the morning, but nature has a way of creating timetables that don’t necessarily match ours.

Since it was near dark and the fog was moving in rapidly, we opted not to disturb the newborn and are fully confident that Opal will handle things just fine. Instead we put a few flakes of hay out for Opal and will check the baby in the morning. Stay tuned to find out more about the new calf!
