Ruby And Zinc

As promised with yesterdays post, this is the story of #41 Ruby and her baby boy Zinc.

At first it was hard to tell if we had one calf with two mama cows willing to claim the baby, or one cow with twin calves while another one  mama was hanging around, or two cows each with a calf. Luckily for us (and for the cows), we had two cows that had given birth about the same time in the same area and they were able to get all sorted out amicably.

#41 Ruby has had a good number of calves and was an old hand at the process, but when Pearl decided it was time to have her calf at the same time it seemed to throw a kink in the works for a short time.

Now #41 Ruby and her bull calf are happily incorporated back into the main herd with Pearl and her bull also. The mama cows are producing milk, the calves are full and content, and the rest of the herd isn’t worried about the youngsters in the least.

So happy everything turned out ok and a welcome to the farm to SAF Zinc born 3/6/20 weighing in at 75 lbs with the same herd sire as Earl which is KC Night Prowler.

For those of you who are keeping track, since January 1 we have had six bulls and one heifer born here on the farm.
