Playing In The Snow
From the title of today’s story you probably expected to see bundled up kids and adults protectively layered with inner tubes, toboggans and all manner of homemade and scrounged pieces of old equipment to suffice for sledding.
Our day without electricity was spent playing in the snow in another way. Mike had to use the front loader tractor to find a log that he had salvaged during the summer time and set near the landing for a time when he had time to get to it to process it into firewood for our outdoor furnace. Once he had the log hoisted above the snowpack, he jiggled it on the front forks to dislodge most of the snow covering and dropped it on top of and area that had been packed down firm.
Cutting the log on top of the packed snow guaranteed that the powerful chainsaw would not hit any rocks as long as the cutter (Mike) paid close attention and didn’t cut below the log. With one person chopping, one splitting with a wedge and sledgehammer, and another grabbing split pieces to stack on the front loader, our day of fun in the snow went very well. We didn’t even miss the issue of no power since we were having so much fun.
It was a treat to find out at the end of the day that the power had come back on and we could enjoy hot showers and a good dinner while retelling stories from the day in the snow.
