Paulette And Hopper
Less than 12 hours after Mike and I moved Paulette into the nursery field so that she would be more comfortable during the last days of pregnancy, she delivered a frisky bull calf.
Mike had been saying since Christmas that both Paulette and Opal were near birthing time, and Paulette had begun her pre-delivery limping with the baby shifting around toward the birth position. He timed the move into the nursery field perfectly since Paulette was able to get a good evening meal with Opal and #7 while their two babies milled about. With the wind and bursts of rain throughout the night, the whole bunch from the nursery field moved into the shelter of the barn where Paulette had a comfy, dry, clean layer of wood chips to bring her baby into the world.
Hopper got his name because he was cavorting around the pen mere hours after delivery and he likes to bounce rather than run. It was hard at first to tell the two new babies apart when the group moved outside for their first meal together in the large nursery field since both Clint and Hopper are the same size, but it wasn’t long before Hopper started doing his bounce and Clint got busy scampering back and forth between all five of the other critters trying to figure out what all the fresh smelling hay was all about. Between hops, the newborn stops long enough for a snuggle and a quick snack before taking off again.
Chad, the older calf in the nursery field, wasn’t bothered at all by the commotion of the newer calves. He is an old hand at feeding time and doesn’t waste precious bites running with the new babies until his belly is full.
Welcome to the farm SAF Hopper, born 1/5/2020 and weighing in at 82 lbs.

I knew Paulette would pop out her calf with ease, and think how much better she is feeling now. An added bonus for this reader: Hopper was born on my birthday!
Well happy birthday to Bonnie and Hopper!
