Opal And Clint

We have been watching both Paulette and Opal to see which one would be the first to calve and we have a winner.

On 1/3/2020 Opal, after eating a hearty breakfast with the rest of the herd, she moved to the back of the field to deliver a healthy bull calf. Mike had a visitor to the farm that day and the two were just in time to witness the birth of our newest calf. They had been on the hill after the morning feeding and was just coming out of the woods when he saw Opal by herself and in labor. Opal didn’t dally around and produced a new calf in short order.

Welcome to the farm to new bull calf, SAF Clint sired by KC Night Prowler reg. # 18890503, and weighing in at 82 lbs.

Opal and her newborn have been moved out into the nursery field along with #7 and her month old calf so we can keep a close eye on the new addition while feeding them away from the main herd. Both #7 and Opal are old hands at this game of rearing young and they will take good care of these babies and protect them from dangers. Chad, the month old baby, is especially happy with this new arrangement because now he doesn’t have to compete with the other calves in the herd that are nearing weaning age and we are happy not to have to try to find non-muddy spots to drop hay for him away from the outdoor feeders.
