In the Fields

On The Mend

cow in fieldQuiet had been a very pampered critter during her young years, she has done more traveling and had been to more shows than I have, but she comfortable with her current retirement life. She enjoyed (and still would enjoy) grooming sessions, getting soaped up on a wash rack and getting a superstar treatment of blow drying her pelt from stem to stern although she doesn’t get that much attention here on the farm. She nearly melts when I get out a curry comb to swipe through the unruly winter coat of hers and since she is in the process of getting rid of the heavy cold weather layer of hair, it sheds as fast as I can comb.

The winter was rough for Quiet’s feet. She broke a hoof about a month ago and while it was only tender at first, she hobbled around fairly well. It was went she needed to go from the soft turf of the lower pasture, up the rocked path and into the barn where she seemed to have more trouble. The split in her back hoof widened and each step created more damage, soon the protective hoof layer didn’t protect very well. An infection started and we could see swelling around the hoof.

We moved her from the back of the barn and pasture to the front pens where walking was smoother and began treatment of barnyard strength topicals. With the muddy (and very mucky) areas around the barn, Quiet was still having trouble so we moved her from the barn completely and have been feeding and watering her outside in the soft pasture for several weeks now.

Slowly, the hoof is healing and she is walking better each day. She is not alone in the pasture since we moved the four yearlings in with her. She lets us know the foot is better because she now fusses at Mike when she sees the tincture headed her way, before she was not comfortable lifting her foot off the ground.

The younger critters go into the barn for feeding time so Quiet is not disturbed while dining. And after this week, we have a new pasture available on the far side of the bull pen for Quiet to continue her recuperation.
