On A Mission

While we humans are busy driving equipment round and round the hayfield, the dogs are making good use of the disturbance by hunting.

Mowing the grass with the very noisy mower tends to spook mice that have created endless trails throughout the field. They build nests at the base of the stems at ground level. The machines send the critters scurrying and the dogs come along to make a snack out of them. Once and a while, they find a snake or two, but this year the mice are more prevalent and plentiful.

Out of the pair of dogs, Jackson spends the most time on his hunting expeditions and we can see him going from one row to the next until he is very hot and tired when he then heads to the river to cool down only to return to his job after a good splash. He doesn’t bother to shake off as he troops around the field jet-drying until he gets the next urge to cool off.

When the time does come for a longer rest, it is not a surprise to see one or both dogs lounging around near some of the hay equipment that is not being used at the time or by the Gator that is considered home-base for all their adventures.

It is a good gig for the dogs with all the mice tidbits, and it is very good for us to get the vermin controlled before they get baled up and stored along with the hay.

Hay season means different things to different folks. I’m hoping your hay is not compromised nutritionally with this dastardly hot weather.
