Oh Mudder

young bull with mud covered faceAs we were preparing to feed some hay to the main herd, this bull calf came up from the woods with mud smeared all over his face.

His name is Garnet and tag Number #65. He was born January 30 and weighed 79 pounds. On February 19 we gave him his ear tag. His mother gives him a good supply of milk and he eats his share of grass and hay. At 4 1/2 months of age he weighs more than 450 pounds.

During the summer months, the cows ‘paint’ themselves to keep flies from bothering. It has not been warm enough weather for many flies yet. This young calf found a puddle after the recent rainy days and just couldn’t help himself try to act all grown up.

He had to stop and stare at me because I was laughing pretty loud. It was hard to get a picture that was in focus.

Calves spend several months generally enjoying life. They gang up with other calves, chase others around the fields, and flop out in the bright sunshine. Playing teaches them their strengths while mothers keep a close eye and keep them out of trouble, usually.
