Nyad And Dolphin

One of the cows that had twins last year did a really good job raising Little and Piddle that were born during the early part of March last year. She did such a good job making enough milk for the two hungry babies that she did not come back into heat so this year her delivery was over three months later than her calving time last year.

Nyad # 49 has been our last calving hold out, but not without controversy. A month ago we noticed that she was beginning to fill up with milk and thought that calving was going to happen shortly, a couple of weeks ago it looked like any day. It wasn’t until we moved her and the main herd to the far, far field that she snuck off into the cool shade between the river and the hay field where she delivered her calf.

It took quite a while to find the pair since she had her little one hidden under a brace of a cedar fence that was underneath a wide, low big leaf maple tree. The calf was dosing comfortably while Nyad was grazing nearby. The dogs were a great help, after we had spotted the cow.

A little later, we saw the pair out in the opening of a small meadow and was able to get a good look at the new arrival.
