Not To Be Forgotten
After moving the two weaned bulls to the bull pen, the two heifers are hanging out comfortably in the pen and seem happy to have a little extra space.
We are taking an couple of extra weeks with these two heifers. We are working toward the day that the younger one, the one that is half of the twin set from across the river, has had time to adjust to being pen mates with the other heifer that was weaned and that she gets more regulated to feed rather than mothers milk. #22 has been doing great so far, but she is still a little hesitant to begin eating. That hesitation could be the difference between robust growth and not getting enough to eat with the more aggressive chow-fest that is meal time on the other side of the barn.
The other side of the barn has the two show cows, an older heifer that is ready to begin the breeding stage of her life, a heifer still a couple of months away from breeding time and three calves. They are noisy and pushy when it comes to meal time. We have the bigger critters locked in head stanchions but the three calves are still too little for the head gates to lock them in. By giving #22 a little more time she will be able to fend off the other calves in order to get a good meal each time.
