Meeting And Greeting

three Angus in fieldThe newest calf to join the herd, Flip Wilson, made his appearance during a beautiful sunny day just before our expected weather turn. It was a good thing too, calving during poor weather is tough on the mother, the baby and those of us who are trying to assist.

Ruby didn’t need any help with Flip, in fact she made it clear that she did not want me too close while she labored. I was happy to watch from a short distance without interfering.

Once delivered, Ruby was busy cleaning Flip from stem to stern mooing guttural love messages the whole time. Flip was alert and busy with his own task of trying to unplug his ears by shaking his floppy, gunk soaked, appendages. The commotion was noticed by the five calves in the nursery field and it wasn’t long before they came over to greet the newborn.

By evening, Ruby had moved her and Flip in with the group of other cow/calf pairs and everyone was getting along nicely.
