Last Of The Short Crop

The last of the early summer Yellow Transparent Apple has now been picked. This season is so short and the fruit so tender that you will not be able to buy this variety in a grocery store. Many people have never even heard of this variety before and I have not seen and specimens of the tree available for sale in garden centers for many years.

These early apples give us the tease of apples to come later in the season that ripen and hopefully  will last well into the fall and after the first frosts hit the area.

With my handy pole picker I was able to get every apple off the tree. This harvest was really only half the tree because the trunk of the tree had been grafted about 75 years ago and the other half is a late fall/winter apple that will ripen 2 months from now.

It only takes 2 apples to fill a tray of the home dehydrator and takes 3 trays of dried apples to fill one quart sized freezer bag.

Storage is easy for the sealed freezer bag stacks in the cupboard.

Before heading out on any adventure, a bag of fruit goes with me. Most times I will mix up apples, pears, peaches, strawberries, prunes (and this year thanks to my friend) figs. There will be a bag tucked into the glove box of each of my vehicles, my overnight bag has one and I will always have a small bag tucked into my jacket or coat when I trek out into the woods for mushroom hunting or day tripping.
