CattleIn the Barn

Into Each Life A Little Poop May Fall

It was a pre-dawn morning in the show barn. I had a busy day planned so wanted to start before the lazy sun had popped above the horizon. I could just barely see as I inched my way along the well worn path to be barn. The feral cat brigade danced around my feet weaving here and there in an effort to be first in line at the chow pan as I moved closer to the barn. With cat food in one gloved hand and unlocking the gate with the other, I fumbled into the people and hay part of the barn, fed the unruly cats and went to the business of getting ready to feed the critters who had begun to stick their heads into the mangers.

black calf with poop all over her headThat is when I noticed #71, the yearling heifer calf that is just about ready to get weaned. She had a cap-coating of liquidy green poop on top of her head. Most likely she was trying to sneak an early snack from behind her mama, when said mama let loose with her morning constitutional.

Poor #71 was now sporting a goopy-poopy beanie. Every time she put her head into the head-gate stanchion she would smear the stuff on the metal with the whole thing threatening to slide off at any moment. To contain the mess, I locked the head gate and cleaned most of it off before I did the feeding, but not before I was able to snap a couple of the pictures of the predicament she had gotten involved in.

A new way to say “Get lost, kid.” The picture is too dark to see the mess, but your description says it all.
