How Green Are My Fields
The rain we have been getting is by no means big amounts nor plentiful enough to fill the river (it has dropped well below what would allow ocean salmon upstream to spawn). What moisture we are getting has brought us out of fire season and that in itself is a huge relief after the long, dry summer we had been suffered through.
We are still drought conditions and I am finding dry spots under the thick, tall firs when looking for mushrooms in the forest. I still haven’t found a lobster mushroom and they are typically all over the forest by now.
The hayfields that had dried up during summer and were nothing but crunchy, close cropped grass, have sucked in the moisture and are greening up nicely.
We are still feeding the main herd a few bales twice a day to keep the critters from getting too much green that would quickly turn into stomach upset and the whole herd shooting liquid green poop everywhere.
Until we get a solid frost below 30 degrees, the grass fields should continue to grow for a little while.
