In the Woods

His, Mine and Ours

log landingWe have finally started into logging with Mike bringing turns down the hill with the dozer. He brings them off the hill tree length, that means most of the tree is brought down out of the woods except for the extreme tip and the limbs (as long as the tree did not break when it was felled).

Bringing the whole tree out of the woods lessens the amount of fuel in the forest. We try to pay attention to cleaning up around and under the trees that are still in the woods especially during fire season. But not all the tree can be sold as timber.

Mike calculates the logs out of each tree to get the most value for each stick. The parts that are too crooked, have visible defects, or are too small for timber get moved out of his piles (he has several areas that are segmented as to which mill the logs will be hauled to) and into either my piles ( I have a pile for dry fir, another for wet/green fir, yet another area for hardwood like cherry or maple that is piled into either dry stock or green)  or the area we have designated for our personal firewood.

log deck in landingSome of the smaller pieces of wood are moved with the help of the front end loader of the tractor. Mike is able to lift, move and place the  logs so they don’t roll out of the proper deck.

You would think that with all the different decks we would get wood mixed up but Mike is very calculating and the decks are laid out in a workable pattern so that even if I go to cut up a deck, I can be certain that I am hacking up the wood slated for firewood and not accidentally creating firewood out of viable logs.

Took you advice yesterday and froze green beans without blanching. Two cookie sheets in the freezer that I will put in gallon bag today. Sure was easy.
