Half Naked Bull

A couple of months ago, I heard a comment about our herd sire, Renaissance. He was sporting such a heavy winter coat that he appeared ‘fuzzy.’ He certainly had a lot of fur. Curly hair swirled around his face making his head look twice its size, he looked like a big Fozzy Bear.

In the post on March 8, I had pictures of Renaissance with his head in the open end of the barn storage area. This was just the beginning of his scratching to slowly peel away that old winter coat. A Black Angus herd sire standing in grass field with budding maple tree in the back.

Since being moved across the river to the main herd, he has stopped at every tree,  branch and stump to itch, scratch, and loose tuffs of hair. Most of his head has lost the curly mop of hair, as has his front shoulders, the top of his back and his behind. He still has long hair hanging on his sides and belly. As the weather gets warmer, this hair will naturally slough off, he was just not waiting to get started.

The hair that is growing back is short and smooth. Eventually, Renaissance will be a slick, sleek herd sire just like people expect to see. It will be interesting to see if he returns to his curly mop next winter or if that was just his rebellious teen stage.
