Good Day All Around
I have heard rumors that there are farm operations that run just fine with a single person, that is not the case here. The chores around here tend to need two people to work together to get them accomplished. It’s not like it is a lot of work, but for some reason it runs smoother and faster with two sets of arms, two strong backs and two sturdy mud boots.
It seems every task that needs to be done needs a spotter, a fence opener, a second set of something to get it done. The simple act of filling the stock tanks with water needs two people, one to walk to the irrigation pump and get it going while a second mans a hose or two across the road and around the barnyards. Once the water is going, one person fills the tanks around the separate pens on one side of the barns while the other fills the tanks around the bull pen and by the house. What would take one person a couple of hours to do, two people can complete in less than an hour.
So the other day when Mike said that he had planned a hunting party to try and thin out the herd that has been torturing our grazing fields, I was grateful that he was making time to do that while thinking that I would have to do the chores by myself for the day. With the snow we had last week, and the good amounts of rain we have been having as it all melts away, theĀ mud is really slowing each task down to a soggy, boggy, slog.
I was relieved to hear that one of the hunters was to be my BIL and that my sister was going to accompany him to the farm and my concerns over doing the chores by myself disappeared! The hunters took off early and my sister and I had time to dawdle and catch up on all we have missed until the daybreak.
One light out we went about doing the chores in the show barn and the bull pen. The dogs were loaded onto the Gator and we headed over to feed the cow/calves in the nursery field and the main herd.
Once the Gator was over the bridge I could see a black lump along the fence line in the nursery field, it looked like Plum had finally, Finally, FINALLY decided to plop out that calf! It was just yesterday Mike announced that it would be a male because Plum was taking her sweet time growing the ‘boy bits’ rather than plopping him out. The official birth announcement will be tomorrow.
My day turned out really good because the hunters were not able to thin the herd out on this day which means my cleanup and harvest duty were not needed for cleanup, I had valuable sister time and even had help to do chores and bundles and we have a healthy new calf!
