Getting Down To The Last Of The Apples
This year, fresh fruit has been good to our cattle. It has been a steady stream of apples for the critters in the show barn and in the bull pen since early summer when the Yellow Transparent apples began to ripen. Since then we have have variety after variety of apples, pears and plums available for the cows to enjoy with their two feedings each day.
The winter apples are dwindling now and most have fallen off the trees, leaving them nearly bare after the leaves gave up and fell to the ground earlier in the month. The few straggling apples still clinging to the branches by their slender stems are fodder for the birds. When the apples do fall, there is not much left of the carcass, many times there is nothing much left but the core with a bit of skin.
