Frantic Time Winding Down

The flurry of flopping and flipping salmon has been dwindling over the last two weeks. More and more we are seeing the spent carcasses littering the edges of the river bank. The bald eagles have been trying to keep up with the feast. We are seeing our local three that have been around the river between here and Vernonia for the last five years. They are pretty distinctive because two are full sized Bald Eagles with all the beautiful white feathers of head and tail along with a full sized mottled Eagle, they appear to be a family because they always travel, hunt and feast together.

sun shining on river and treesSince Eagles live for twenty years or so, we expect to keep seeing this family as they perch as stoic sentinels or patrol the waters edge. We get to see them up close now and again as they fly right over head while we are on the bridge. Their size takes me by surprise as they glide by.

With the salmon spawning drawing to a close, the eagles will spend more time traversing the forests looking for small mammals or bone piles left from hunters. They are efficient at clean-up  both in the river and on land.

What a treat to see the eagles up close. Is their nest close by?

    • The only currently active nest I am aware of is on the other side of Vernonia along the river. But that is a nesting pair so it doesn’t match with this trio. These guys have to be fairly close because we see them on several trips each year.
