Final Push To Get The Honey Crisps

Honey Crisp Apples right off the tree and a gallon of dried fruit

The dehydrator has been running non-stop the last two weeks. Trays and trays, AND more trays and trays have been sequenced through the drying process.

The Honey Crisp Apple harvest has kept me busy before the short season comes to an abrupt end. Rather than tennis elbow, I am experiencing apple thumb from using my peeler to prep the bushels of apples.

The peeler of choice is a replica of the same one my Mom had used when I was growing up.

I just happened to inherit this one when we set out to purchase this property back in the 1970’s. It is an iconic, light-weight aluminum tool that graced many kitchens in the early century and it is still going strong for my fruiting projects.

The peeler is by no means fancy and just the way I like it. The ultra thin blades are a result of the era of use. I have tried all the new gadgets from the long skinny peeler to the odd shaped, plastic molded varieties in pretty colors but always come back to this good old kitchen staple.

The apples are down to the last days, but the peeler will still be used throughout the winter for vegetable prep of all manner of stew and casserole ingredients. This peeler may not be around much longer and I am on the lookout for a replacement for another peeler just like this one if anyone ever sees one at a garage sale or if some Grandma (or Grandpa) has retired from their kitchen. I doubt if I will ever be able to use a new fangled one with the same dexterity, speed and absolute joy that I have found with this utensil.
