Final KO For Lettuce
In the spring, we had planted lettuce in three week intervals to extend the growing season.
Our early ‘heat dome’ event wiped out the first couple of plantings by either cooking them outright or sending them into a bolting spurt. The subsequent plantings were not as spring-green in texture but were hanging on until this last week long heat streak.
We had a leaf lettuce that was very frilly and it was a wonderful addition to salads until they all bolted in what seemed like an overnight growing frenzy.
All we could do was pull all the lettuce from the garden for this growing season. The cows were very happy with the wheelbarrow load of lettuce varieties.
If I get the chance in the next week or two, I may seed a short row for lettuce in the fall, but I’m not making any promises that will happen.
I planted my “let’s see if I can get an early fall crop” of lettuce two days ago. I’m not usually successful with this, but who knows. A combination of weather issues and forgetfulness to water on my part plays a part. Right now, a sprinkle of rain is doing the watering part – Hallelujah!
So grateful for a little moisture the last couple of days!!! I keep thinking a summer gully-washer will hit when I see the gray clouds rolling in but all they are squeezing out are a few misty sprinkles.
