Dry Day Run
Mike took advantage of the dry day by making a run to Philomath to get grain for the cattle in the show barn and in the bull pen. By picking up the large bags of grain on a dry day, the pellets are not likely to get moisture that could lead to mold (a big concern especially for those cows that are pregnant).
Philomath is quite a drive for grain, but we are pretty picky about what we feed our cattle and The Feed Palace (formally known as E BAR S) has consistent quality that we are willing to drive several hours to purchase. The name change is a fairly recent change since the end of summer but Barry Schrock is still producing the same quality feed as before.
We pick up pellets that are made by Barry and his company out of grass seed screenings, the husks and cracked seeds mixed with molasses. Our cattle do well with this non-corn addition to their grass hay diet and according to USDA guidelines, the grass seed pellets used as a feed amendment are approved to keep our labeling for our beef as grass fed.
Mike is able to haul two-one ton bags in the bed of the pickup when he goes on the long drive down I-5. Several hours later, we are able to unload at home with the help of our front loader tractor and place the 2000 lb. bags in whichever barn is in need of a new supply.
Readers have asked for Barry’s number so here it is; 541-609-8647.
