Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree

The elk have me singing along to the old Glenn Miller song, Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree, who brought it to the public two months after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

elk eating applesThe three cow elk with their babies, now on their way to being ‘teenagers’, elk have been hanging out under the apple tree in the pasture. The cows spend time trying to figure out how to get to the apples still on the tree while the calves sneak a snack from those that have fallen to the ground.

While the ballad is about a soldier reminding his girl that he will be back after fighting for our country and the girl reminds the soldier that she won’t be flirting around as long as he stays true while many miles away.

The last stanza of the song has the guy and the gall singing together,

“Don’t sit under the apple tree with anyone else but me

I know the apple tree is reserved for you and for me

And I’ll be true till you come marchin’ home”

While the elk are busy with this tree, you will not find me sitting under it with or without a person to snuggle.

Sing along with me

Oh, oh, oh, don’t sit under that apple tree,

It’s a dangerous place to be,

Dangerous place to be,

Dangerous place to be…

Those elk might welcome you if you would shake the branches for them, but I wouldn’t trust them to be gentle.
