Crooked Barn
Time has not been easy on the crooked barn. Built in the 1950’s by a man with failing eyesight, and only a plumb bob (a bolt tied to the bottom of a string, the bolt was enough weight to hold the string straight down. He did not have a level to set the posts straight). The center beams were never set exactly upright, each year the strength of the building shifted slightly even though we had tried several times to shore up the leaning beams.
The building itself was built mostly from scraps. Weathered boards from the old chicken coop, timbers for crossbeams harvested from the hillside, and cedar shakes left over from the house roof. The tin roof and square center beams were purchased. A crew of neighbors had come up to nail the tin into place fearing the nearly blind man would not be able to survive the fall.
