Contented Cows

I am very liberal with my literal meanings. This story is really not about contented cows but contented heifers (young female critters). But this story is really, really not about contented heifers but six contented heifers and one contented steer (the male version of heifer but neutered).

These seven critters are the weaned animals that are spending their time growing until the next stage of their lives.

Five of the heifers are looking like they will make excellent cows (heifers that have had grown up and had offspring) and will be available for sale to other farms for their breeding program or for us to keep as replacement cows for our retiring mothers.

Two of the group are the second set of twins. The  heifer of mixed sex twins is called  Freemartin, Free Martin or Free-Martin. They do not reproduce because of the hormones inherited from her brother while in the womb  that caused her ovaries to shrink. Twins, even if the same sex, are typically only used for meat production. Twins tend to be on the small side when born, are restricted from getting all the milk a single calf would get and do not gain weight easily or grow to full adult size.

During this stage of growing for the contented critters, there is much time lounging around. After a day of snowing then melting off, the sun decided to make an appearance and the female twin spent her time dreaming of breathing in lotus scented tropical breezes. Or at least that is what it looked like. Instead of being tucked in and snoozing, she had her nose tilted up in the air while she snored loudly.

Ahhh, that is being content.
