Celia and Fran
Celia injured her left back foot when she was younger. The foot and ankle healed, but some days she does not move smoothly. That foot seems to have a touch of arthritis and especially when she is heavy with calf, she has a hard time keeping up with the rest of the herd.
We moved her out into the nursery field when she was close to calving, that was about a week ago. During the morning feeding we saw that she was in labor, she had two little hooves sticking out. That didn’t stop her from walking over to the hay piles to eat. That lady definitely has her priorities in order. Between labor pains she ate her fill.
She is one of our older cows with much birthing experience. Since the toes were pointed the right direction for a normal delivery, we left her to her natural birthing process. A couple of hours later we checked on her.
Celia had a heifer that weighed in at 68 lbs. Celia had Fran all cleaned off and fed quickly, even before she had delivered the placenta (afterbirth). Wobbly legs on little Fran didn’t stop the pair from heading over to the other mother and babies in the field to bond. As they were making the short walk, Celia delivered the placenta. Another beautiful baby for the good mother cow.
