Another Round Of Weaning

bull calf with green weaner clipBy spreading out the births of our calves throughout the year, the need to wean several times with small batches is the only way we can keep up on the cycle of weaning before the mother cow is too far along with her new calf on the way.

Last week we inserted green nose clips into two calves, one bull #50 and one heifer #68. Both were left with the main herd while wearing the clips that keep them from nursing. #50 was nearly weaned by his mother already and it was no big deal for him. The heifer #68 seemed troubled at first but did not get real upset the way critters do when you just pull them away from their mothers.

The clips do not hurt the calves and it does not keep them from eating. It interrupts the opportunity to nurse so the cow naturally dries up while the baby still is able to be comforted by a caring mother.

Tomorrow the herd will be rounded up in the barn, the two calves with the green weaners will be sorted out and coaxed into the stock trailer where they can get a short trip across the river and across the road to the show barn. At the show barn, I get to take over the duties and will have them eating hay, grain and all the sweet apples and pears they would like. I will also remove their nose clips soon after they are in the show barn.
