CattleIn the Barn

Adding

All I wanted to do was add a picture to this story so that you would know what I was talking about. But the powers that be, those techy, cyber devils that control bandwidth, sunspots, mood swings and all manner of computer-izm have conspired against me…so on with the story.

One of the yearling bulls outfitted with a plastic green weaner clip.
This is a picture of a green nose clip that we call a green weanie. I’m using this old picture because of technical problems that I am probably the cause of.

Last week we put those green weaner clips in four of the oldest calves that are well beyond time to be weaned and moved the whole herd across to the far, far field while the calves figured out that they no longer had access to a milk supply.

Pressure’s calf, #101, the one that has been sharing a grain pan when we tend to Pressure’s tender foot was not happy that we put a clip in his nose and would give us the stink eye rather than share any grain or hay with his mom. It is his loss. The rest of the herd including the three other calves are doing just fine and eating hay with gusto during feeding time.

In another day or two we will bring the herd out of the far, far field and let them into the barn where they will be sorted. The four calves with the weaners will be scooted into the stock trailer for the short trip across the river and county road to the show barn where we will spoil them rotten and remove their clips while they adjust to life without their mothers.
