In the Fields

A Waiting And Layering Game

While we wait and see if the snow forecast is correct, I will be busy doing a good bit of layering. For me, the waiting is the easy part.

It is the layering that I do to keep comfortable during the really wet and cold months that keep people shaking their heads. With poor circulation I am usually the first one in a crowd to grab an extra shirt (got anything with three quarter sleeves for cryin’ out loud?),  a sweater, coat, hoodie, blanket or spare cat to keep the chill away-and that is in the summer months. This time of year I begin first thing out of bed with an extra layer or two on each body segment beginning at double socks to two pair of hats (in case you were wondering my stocking hat fits securely under my baseball cap to keep my ears warm.

Getting around is more difficult but this is the only way for me to spend much time outdoors.

Once geared up in such a fashion, spending anytime around a heat source and I become my own slow cooker. By the time I peel off layer after layer just so I can indulge in a good lunch break, the layers will have to be put back on to return to the great outdoors.

I have spent a lot of time thinking (wishing, hoping and dreaming) of heated garments, but with the amount of wetness and animal refuse I deal with could just imagine myself coated in slimy poop while being electrocuted or a much less demise as not being able to clean the garments with all manner of animal stuff on them. I have pondered advanced warmth materials such as wool, alpaca fiber and down in varying layers to trap my meager body warmth, but that leads me back to my current problem of being able to move once all geared up.

Until I can regulate my own heat, you will see me out and about the farm with all manner of crazy layers. Just think of me as a winter-time Pillsbury Doughboy or Michelin Man, just a little shorter.

Missing the picture, but I did get a good visual from your description. Now I know why you have extra cats.
