In the Garden

A Little Music Needed

I can’t help it. I saw a farmers joke posted on social media in the dead of winter, and it has stuck with me.

Every time I go out into the garden to check on my newly established asparagus plants, I start signing.

Now when I say singing, I have to point out that I cannot carry a tune of any kind. Oh I have tried, I remember back in high school dear Mr. Ludwig, beloved music teacher extraordinaire, placed me just to the left of the best singer in the whole school knowing she could drown out my warbling. My vocal talent has been known to start coyotes howling, the dogs to cower in corners, cats to run off and cows to stampede.

But when I see the the asparagus, spindly shoots breaking the surface of the garden, I just can’t help myself and break into a tune. It is the 1969 song from The 5th Dimension, ‘This is the dawning of the age of asparagus, the age of asparagus….’, or something to that effect.

Now if only I had a little music to go with it my poor attempt of melody, I may not end up killing the tender spikes.
