Aquatic Helpers

Visitors to the farm often question our knowledge when they peek into the stock tanks for the cows. They want to know if we are aware that there are fish swimming around in the water tanks.

To our guests, it seems like a strange combination. But these little goldfish are working for a living, they are eating mosquito larvae and other critters that pumped into the stock tanks when we fill them with natural river water. Sitting water is ideal for mosquitoes to reproduce and we would much rather use the fish for control than adding chlorine or other chemicals to the water. The cows don’t bother the fish and the fish don’t bother the cows.

But on the other hand…

A calico cat perches at side of stock tank watching goldfish.
