#99 And KAOS

Cow and newborn walking in fieldI returned from my session at Newport just in time to help with the last of the evening chores and to find that we had a new addition born while I was away. Mike had originally found the pair nestled in by the log deck. #99 had her baby laying on the wood chips that we had made when we were cutting wood last week.

For those of who remember the old Get Smart series on TV, the shoe phone and cone of silence are iconic memories. Our cow #99 was named Softly but her offspring have been given names to reflect those shows so I can remember the lineage easier. Over the years she has produced, B. Felden a cute little heifer that we named after the actress that played Agent 99, a bull named Maxwell after Smart himself, and another bull named Chief. This year her bull calf is named KAOS after the villain in the story, but this little guy is nothing like the dark force that the good guys were trying to vanquish.

Welcome to the farm, KAOS, born 1/15/2020 weighing in at 84 lbs. By the time I got a good look at him, he had already been moved into the nursery field and everyone was ready for their meal. Since #99 is not shy about running out for her share of the hay that was doled out in the field, she crossed across the rivulets that were running through the field to go eat and expected KAOS to follow but he did not want to get his feet wet so hesitated and momentarily fell behind the rest of the nursery animals. Between the dogs, the Gator and I, we were able to coerce KAOS to find a spot where he was comfortable to cross and join his mother and the rest of the herd. Within moments he was cavorting with the other calves around the hay and mothers while #99 resumed eating dinner.
